The Schwab investment account bonus is designed for people new to investing, though anyone can sign up. The Schwab Starter Kit gives you $101 in stocks for depositing $50 in the account.
$101 worth of “stock slices” as Schwab calls them, meaning fractional shares of stock. The investments are split between the top 5 stocks in the S&P 500 at the time the bonus is credited.
It is also possible to get the bonus as cash with some effort-for that please see the notes.
Open the Schwab investing account and deposit $50 into the account within 30 days of opening. You don’t need to purchase any stock to get the bonus.
To get the Schwab investment account sign-up bonus you must be a new customer of Schwab. Having another account with them makes you ineligible. People who have a Schwab Stock Plan Services account can still get the bonus, but otherwise it’s a no go.
Happily, there are no monthly fees whatsoever!
You can get free checks as well as a debit card to spend directly from your account.
Because this is an account aimed at people who don’t have much investing experience the starter kit includes educational tools to help you learn more about investing.
There’s no deadline listed, so it’s up in the air.
- There’s a very nice benefit for international travelers with this account. Schwab will give you a refund on ATM fees for cash withdrawal at the end of each month. Their checking account also has this benefit.
-
Like I mentioned before it’s possible to keep your bonus money in cash instead of having it invested automatically.
The $101 will be deposited into your account and then Schwab will place orders for the 5 stock purchases at approximately 8:00 EST on the day the bonus credits. Schwab will notify you by email when the bonus is deposited.
You can cancel these orders and keep the cash in your account, although you’ll have to be quick. You’ll have to do it between 8:00 EST the same day and approximately 9:25 EST the next day.
Should you do the Schwab Investment Account sign-up bonus?
This bonus is nice and simple. While the bonus isn’t high, it also isn’t bad at all, and for the simplicity of the sign-up requirements I think it’s a good deal. Depositing $50 is about as easy as it gets. The only catch about this offer would be trying to get the cash instead of having it invested, but that’s optional and up to you.
If you do sign up don’t forget that checking the box for margin trading might trigger a hard credit check. You can avoid it easily, just leave the box unchecked.
