Ibotta is the biggest receipt scanning app out there. It has the most deals of any app that I know and frequently features free or nearly free items. If you want to get cash back on receipts from the grocery store Ibotta is a great place to look.

I’ll tell you how it works below.

I may receive payments or incentives for sign ups and clicks generated through links on this page.  Please see the full disclosure for more information. Thank you for the support!

How Does Ibotta work?

Ibotta cash back grocery offers

The central part of the Ibotta app is rebate offers on groceries.

You choose a store out of the available list and browse through the offers for that store. Most of the offers work out to a discount: $1 or $2 dollars back on the product.

Once you find an offer you like you click the plus button to add it to your list. It’s easy to see what you’ve added-all you need to do is click the list icon at the bottom right of the screen.

You have to add the item to your list before you buy to get credit. Ibotta won’t give rebates for things on the receipt unless you’ve selected those rebates.

When you’ve bought the item you submit the receipt.

Ibotta has two ways of submitting receipts. If the store has a loyalty program you might be able to connect your account, and then the receipt would automatically be scanned. Otherwise you tap the submit receipt button and Ibotta will prompt you to take pics of the receipt with your phone camera.

Make sure that the picture is clear before you submit or Ibotta might not recognize the items. If a paper receipt is really long you can put multiple pictures together.

If everything goes well you’ll get the value of your rebates within a couple days. The amount will be added to your Ibotta balance.

Now I mentioned most of the rebates work out to be a discount. But there are some that are entirely free. They’re all listed in the same place on the app. Just scroll down on the main page to the banners at the bottom and click the 100% off banner.

Bogos are listed in here too.

The Ibotta Shopping Portal

In addition to the receipt rebates, Ibotta also has its own shopping portal.

There’s no direct link to see everything in the shopping portal. Rather, you click on the retailer categories listed on the main page and stores that offer a percentage back will say so.

I’d say the rates are about average for a portal, but once in a while they do have a deal not available anywhere else.

Redeeming Your Cash Back

Gift card options for Ibotta redemptions

First, there’s a $20 minimum to redeem.

Once you’ve met that you’ll be able to choose from a variety of gift cards or a PayPal or bank account withdrawal.

You get to the withdrawal options through the earnings page, which you will find when you tap the money amount button in the top right of the screen.

If you’re getting a gift card though, there’s a better option for redeeming. On the main page in the retailer categories there’s a section called gift cards. Here you can buy many of the same gift cards.

The difference? There’s cash back when you buy it like this. The amount varies by store. After you select the amount you can choose to pay with your Ibotta balance.

Easy peasy. Now you get cash back on your receipts and cash back on your gift card redemptions. Endless cash backmoney-mouth.

Once you’ve redeemed a gift card the details will be available in the Ibotta app. They’ll also notify you through email.

Should You Get Cash Back On Receipts With Ibotta?

If you want to save money on groceries and get cash back on receipts, Ibotta is the place to start. It has the most offers and often the highest payouts as well.

It actually has so many grocery store offers that it takes some time to browse through them and find the ones you want. But that’s not too terrible of a problem to have.

I’ve never had any issues withdrawing earnings. If for some reason an item on a paper receipt doesn’t scan correctly there’s an option to edit the receipt before submitting.

I can’t say I’ve used the portal too much. I usually find slightly higher rates elsewhere. It would be a very easy way to haven an all in one cash back app though, if you don’t want to use many different services.
